Bluetooth speaker products are competing in a highly saturated market. That’s why, when it comes to a new Bluetooth speaker like the K1, it is important it has a specification and finishing that tops many of its competitors within its price range.

At Kew Labs, we’ve ensured our K1 speaker is highly-competitive in the field.

For customers purchasing one of these Bluetooth speakers, it is essential to understand speaker specifications and which are worth investing in.

Here’s a simple guide to speaker specifications from Kew labs Tech…

#Spec1: Bluetooth Speaker Size

There are generally three sizes of Bluetooth speaker: The ultra-portable, the semi-portable and the boombox size.

The K1 falls into the category of ultra-portable, which basically means that it can fit into a back pocket or rucksack.

Semi-portable Bluetooth speakers are more like table-top speakers. Boomboxes are for the biggest parties (often with over a hundred people!) and have a microphone input.

#Spec2: Speaker set-up

Very low-end Bluetooth speakers tend to feature just one speaker which is reflected in the poorer sound quality. Mid-range speakers have two speakers for a more balanced stereo sound.

The best bang for your buck, however, is the 2.1 speaker ratio which is the speaker set-up we have in the K1. The 2.1 ratio consists of two active speakers and a passive subwoofer. This set-up makes for the loudest Bluetooth speaker.

The K1 speaker consists of two 5W dual speakers and 1 passive bass radiator.

Ultimately, we’ve picked the best speaker set-up for the K1.

#Spec3: Battery

The battery power must be compared to the speaker itself in order to determine the efficiency of power. It is best to look at the manufacturer’s guidelines for how long the battery lasts rather than opting for the speaker with the largest battery. For example, a speaker could have an output of 4000 mAh but run for fewer hours than a speaker with 2500 mAH.

The battery in the K1 lasts at least 8 hours. It is built-in and rechargeable. It has a battery saver mode so that it can last for 12 hours.

The battery provides 2600 mAh of power.

Be wary for manufactures claiming speakers can run for 24 hours as this might usually indicate the volume being as low as possible and inaudible when tested.

#Spec4: Hardcore features IPX4 specification

How wet can the speaker get? Will it break when dropped?

The fourth feature of a speaker is, of course, how much wear and tear it can withstand.

Some speakers may well be waterproof enough to be submerged in the water for over 30 minutes. Some can’t face water at all. The K1 can cope with a few splashes if you’re caught out in the rain.

While we wouldn’t recommend purposely playing your music in the pouring rain, your speaker is unlikely to break down if a few drops of rainwater did get on it.

IPX4 specification means that the speaker is protected from water, but doesn’t compromise on style.

The speaker also features rubber qualities and a protective coating on the grill, for a little added protection.

#Spec5: Speaker wattage/efficiency

How many watts is good for speakers?

Despite popular opinion, higher wattage doesn’t necessarily mean louder volume. Rather than concentrating purely on wattage, it is best to concentrate on speaker efficiency. The speaker’s ability to use watts to create a great sound.

#Spec6: Range

How far do you need your Bluetooth range to reach?

The K1 has a range of 20 metres. Far enough? We think so.

Other features to consider

Do you want your Bluetooth speaker to have a hands-free option? Do you want to listen to your speaker with headphones (you’ll need to make sure the speaker has an earphone jack in that case) and how much do you want to spend?

The K1 speaker stands out in the market for its attractive colour. It is supreme in both style and sound. At a great price.
